Salma Agha, the renowned singer from Pakistan, mesmerized audiences not only with her melodious voice but also with her acting prowess in Indian cinema during the vibrant 1980s and early 1990s. Her rendition of the ghazal “Dil ke Armaan” in the film Nikaah earned her the prestigious Filmfare Best Female Playback Award in 1982.
Born into affluence in Karachi, Salma’s life took a turn when she relocated to London at the tender age of nine. A youthful marriage at sixteen to a prominent Pakistani settled in London soon ended in divorce, prompting Salma to explore her talents alongside her sister Sabina. Together, they produced and performed on a record featuring Hindi renditions of ABBA hits, garnering critical acclaim albeit without significant impact in the Hindi film industry.
Fate intervened when acclaimed filmmaker Raj Kapoor extended an invitation to Salma’s mother, Zarina Agha, during a high-profile wedding reception in London. This encounter paved the way for Salma’s entry into Bollywood, as she seized the opportunity presented by director B.R. Chopra’s quest for a Muslim actress for his forthcoming project.
Bolstered by her uncle Raj Kapoor’s influence, Salma ventured into the world of Indian cinema, her ABBA-inspired melodies striking a chord with audiences even before the release of her debut film. However, the journey to cinematic success was not without its hurdles, as the movie faced scrutiny from Islamic clerics, leading to a title change to Nikah.
Despite the initial challenges, Nikah catapulted Salma to stardom, earning her widespread acclaim and a coveted Filmfare nomination for Best Actress. Subsequent endeavors in Bollywood, including notable contributions to films like Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, further solidified her status as a leading actress.
Transitioning back to her roots, Salma explored opportunities in Pakistani cinema, albeit with mixed success. Her personal life mirrored the highs and lows of her professional journey, marked by marriages, divorces, and ultimately finding solace in companionship with squash coach Rehmat Khan.
Today, settled in the serene surroundings of the UAE, Salma continues to captivate audiences with her soulful renditions, occasional forays into cinema, and entrepreneurial ventures, embodying resilience and grace in the face of life’s uncertainties.
