Geeta Dutt (Bengali: গীতা দত্ত) (November 23, 1930 – July 20, 1972) was an iconic Indian playback singer, renowned for her captivating voice that left an indelible mark on the Indian film industry. Born Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri into a prosperous zamindar family in Faridpur, East Bengal in 1930, her journey to stardom began in Bombay when her family relocated to a modest apartment in Dadar in 1942.
It was in this humble setting that composer/music director Hanuman Prasad recognized her talent during a casual singing session and offered her vocal training. Geeta’s debut in Bhakht Prahlad (1946), with just two lines, showcased her remarkable talent and marked the beginning of her illustrious career. The turning point came with her stellar performance in Do Bhai the following year, propelling her to the forefront of playback singing in the Bombay film industry from 1947 to 1949.
In the 1950s, despite the dominance of Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta held her ground and emerged as one of the era’s leading playback singers alongside Shamshad Begum. The release of Baazi in 1951 introduced a new dimension to her singing, blending Western influences with her innate Indian style, captivating audiences with her versatility.
Her association with director Guru Dutt not only enriched her personal life but also elevated her career to new heights. Despite facing familial opposition, they married in 1953 and had three children. Geeta’s collaboration with music maestro S.D. Burman in films like Devdas (1955) and Pyaasa (1957) further showcased her exceptional talent and versatility.
However, personal turmoil began to overshadow her professional success. Troubles in her marriage and Guru Dutt’s involvement with Waheeda Rehman strained their relationship, affecting Geeta’s career. Despite efforts to revive it with films like Gauri (1957), setbacks continued, and she struggled with personal demons, including alcoholism.
The decline in her career mirrored her personal struggles, compounded by financial difficulties and declining health. Though she attempted comebacks with films like Bhadu Bharan (1967) and Anubhav (1971), her battle with alcoholism proved insurmountable. Geeta Dutt passed away in 1972 at the age of 41, leaving behind a legacy of timeless melodies and a voice that resonates to this day.
